National Leaders
National Leadership roles require at least a 2-year commitment. Each of these opportunities requires an additional application or nomination and interview.
National Council members are elected by the student delegation, Region Coordinators are appointed by the National President, and Foundation Board of Trustees are elected by fellow Foundation Trustees.
Mortar Board National Council
The National Council is made up of the National President, vice president, president-elect, secretary, treasurer, two alumni representatives at-large and two student representatives at-large, and the immediate past president. The president of the MBNF Board of Trustees serves ex officio with voice and vote, and the Executive Director serves ex officio with voice but without vote.
Mortar Board National Foundation Board of Trustees
There are at least seven and no more than eleven elected trustees and three ex officio members of the Board. Two ex officio members are the National President and the treasurer of the National Council. These ex officio members may vote but may not hold office. The ED is an ex officio member of the Board without vote. The offices are president, vice president, secretary and treasurer, who serve for two-year terms. The president and secretary are elected in odd years and vice president and treasurer are elected in even years from among the trustees. The officers form the Executive Committee of the Board.
A trustee’s term of office is three years. A term begins and ends at the Board’s annual meeting. No trustee may serve more than two consecutive terms. Only a member of Mortar Board may be a trustee. If a vacancy is filled during the year, the trustee will be counted as having begun service with the subsequent annual meeting, unless another agreement is made for a shorter term. The Board may name nonvoting advisors to the MBNF.
Region Coordinator
Mortar Board chapters are assigned to one of six (6) geographic regions across the country so that region coordinators can communicate with chapters easily and establish continuity within the Society. Each region has a team of Region Coordinators (typically 3-4 RCs) that guide that region. In accordance with the Bylaws of Mortar Board, Inc, region coordinators are appointed by the National President and are considered national leaders. The MBI vice president is the official liaison for region coordinators and the National Council and works closely with the Director of Collegiate Success.
Each region coordinator is a liaison between the Society and collegiate chapters and their advisors. Each region coordinator is expected to make contact with appropriate institutional campus leadership as needed to strengthen Mortar Board on the campus.
Committees
Standing Committees typically request a 2-year commitment, with the opportunity for continued engagement. Standing committees are appointed by either the National President or the Foundation President.
Ad hoc committees are typically shorter in terms, from a few weeks to up to a 1-year commitment. Ad hoc committees are appointed by either the National President, the Foundation President, or the Executive Director.
